Sydney to Cairns: the coast road, town by town

A long coastal journey through New South Wales and Queensland, with towns, beaches and rainforest along the way.

36 hours of driving, and no unsealed section anywhere on it.

The coast has many places to stop, but long legs and busy travel days still need preparation. Plan fuel, rest breaks and overnight stops before each day’s drive.

The main highway between Sydney and Cairns is sealed, while side roads may vary. Travel times and distances depend on your stops, so check your own route and leave time to explore.

So the useful thing to know is not the distance. It is where the coast changes character, which is four places, and how many of the eleven stops you can sleep at before the trip turns into a delivery run.

Where the coast changes, and you can feel it

Newcastle to Coffs Harbour

This is the part people rush. It is 376 km of forest and small towns, and it is the last stretch where the road runs through the country rather than beside it. The Pacific Highway is fast and dual carriageway most of the way, which makes it easy to do in a morning and easy to regret doing in a morning.

Byron Bay to Brisbane

Two hours, three changes of character, and the densest cluster of stops on the route. Byron, the Gold Coast and Brisbane sit within 170 km of each other. If you are picking one place to spend three nights, this is where the choice is hardest and matters most.

Rockhampton to Airlie Beach

At 480 km this is the longest single leg on the route, and the one where the country changes. South of Rockhampton the coast is green and wet. North of it the cane gives way to dry grass and the towns stretch apart. Do not plan anything after this drive.

Townsville to Cairns

347 km through the wet tropics, reef offshore and rainforest inland. The road is good and the country is the reason people come. It is also the wettest section in summer, when a day that looks fine in Townsville can be closed by water north of Ingham.

How long it actually takes, and why five days is the wrong answer

The honest version depends on how many of the eleven stops you sleep at.

At eight hours a day you can drive Sydney to Cairns in five days. Nobody should. That pace means arriving after dark, cooking in a car park and leaving before the town is awake, which is a way of covering ground but not a way of seeing the coast.

Two weeks is the shortest version that feels like a trip rather than a delivery. Three weeks lets you stop at six or seven of the eleven and stay two nights in the ones that deserve it. A month is the version most people say they wish they had taken.

A campervan suits this route better than any other on the site. Towns are frequent, so you are never far from a shop or a water tap, and the freedom to stop where the day ends is worth more here than on a route where the stops are fixed.
