Crossing the Nullarbor

A long sealed crossing between Adelaide and Perth, with remote stretches that reward careful fuel and overnight planning.

What the crossing involves

The usual east–west journey connects Adelaide, Port Augusta and Ceduna with the Eyre Highway, then crosses into Western Australia towards Norseman and Perth. The Nullarbor is part of a much longer trip between the cities. Choose your stops before measuring the route: side trips to the Eyre Peninsula or the coast add distance and time.

Ceduna and Norseman are useful gateways to the more remote section. Neither is the start or end of an Adelaide–Perth journey, so allow separate days for the roads beyond them.

Plan your fuel and overnight stops

Roadhouses are an important part of the crossing, but opening hours, fuel supply and accommodation can change. Check current details with providers before travelling, calculate your vehicle’s real range when loaded, and keep a generous reserve. Confirm any restrictions on carrying extra fuel in your hire agreement.

Choose realistic overnight stops rather than planning around the longest possible driving day. Start early, stop regularly and be prepared to change plans if you are tired, weather changes or a service is unavailable. Carry sufficient drinking water and supplies.

The coast and the crossing

The Great Australian Bight is one reason to slow down. Head of Bight offers a chance to experience the coast, and southern right whales visit seasonally. Check the visitor site’s current access and seasonal information before making a detour; wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Across the state border, quarantine rules can affect what food and other items you may carry. Check the current requirements of both states before packing, particularly if you are travelling in the opposite direction.

Road conditions and vehicle choice

The Eyre Highway is sealed, but weather, roadworks and long distances still call for care. Avoid driving tired and be alert for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk. Phone reception is not continuous; save maps offline and let someone know your planned route.

A campervan can suit a sealed-road itinerary if it has the space and range you need. Check the exact vehicle and one-way conditions before booking. For a westbound trip, explore Wicked Campers’ campervan hire in Adelaide.

Before departure, check the Main Roads WA travel map and SA road conditions for closures and incidents.

Questions before you go

How many days should I allow?

Plan for multiple driving days and choose stops that suit your group. The total depends on where you start, your overnight stops and the detours you include.

Is a 4WD needed for the highway?

The main crossing follows sealed roads. An unsealed side trip may need a different vehicle; check access and hire conditions for that road.

Can I rely on mobile reception?

No. Coverage varies across the route. Save information offline and prepare for stretches without a signal.
