Forest, wine country and the southern coast

Travel from Perth towards Albany, taking the coastal and forest towns at a pace that leaves room to stop.

Decide on a one-way drive or a loop

Perth to Albany is not one fixed itinerary. The inland road gives you a more direct journey through the Wheatbelt; the south-western route can take in the Margaret River region, Augusta and Pemberton before reaching the southern coast. The kilometres and driving time change considerably with those choices.

For a return trip, consider taking a different road back to Perth rather than repeating every leg. Tourism Western Australia describes both an inland Perth–Albany route and a longer South West loop. Use them as starting points and map your own stops.

A route through the South West

  • Perth to the Margaret River regionHead south and make room for the towns and coastline along the way. Decide whether beaches, food or a shorter drive matter most to your group.
  • Augusta and the forestsBeyond Margaret River, the route can turn inland towards the tall forest around Pemberton. Allow time for walks and check local park access.
  • On to AlbanyContinue towards the south coast for granite headlands, beaches and a change of landscape. Weather can shift quickly near the coast.
  • Return or continueFrom Albany, return through the Wheatbelt, or add an onward journey only if you have time for the extra driving and accommodation.

How much time should you allow?

A direct run and a sightseeing loop are different trips. An overnight stop can break the journey, but several days give you room for walks, small towns and changing weather. Keep the last day manageable if you need to return a vehicle in Perth.

Book accommodation or campsites that match your route, especially in busy holiday periods. Do not assume that every roadside stop allows overnight camping: check the relevant local rules and the site’s own conditions.

Roads, weather and your vehicle

Main roads connecting the larger towns are sealed. Some beach approaches, forest tracks and park access roads may be unsealed or unsuitable for particular vehicles. Check current conditions with Main Roads WA and park managers, and confirm permitted roads in your hire agreement.

A campervan can work well for a sealed-road loop. If you are starting in Perth, explore Wicked Campers’ campervan hire in Perth and compare the space and equipment you need.

Questions before you go

Is Perth to Albany a loop?

The direct trip is one way. It becomes a loop when you choose a return route; the total depends on your stops.

Do I need a 4WD?

Not for the main sealed roads between major towns. Individual tracks and beaches differ, so check your chosen detours and hire conditions.

Can I add Esperance?

Yes, but it is a separate extension east of Albany. Add the extra distance and nights to your plan rather than treating it as a short local detour.
