The Centre, end to end

From Adelaide through the Red Centre to Darwin: a long inland journey where preparation matters as much as the map.

The road north

The journey from Adelaide to Darwin follows the Explorer’s Way through South Australia and the Northern Territory. Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine are useful points for breaking up the drive. The Stuart Highway forms the central spine of the route, but an itinerary that includes detours will cover more ground than the direct road.

Tourism NT’s Explorer’s Way guide shows a longer itinerary with time for the Red Centre and Top End. Use it to choose stops, then map your own route and add time for breaks.

Where to break the drive

  • Port Augusta and Coober PedyPort Augusta is a useful staging point before heading inland. Coober Pedy gives the trip an overnight stop and an introduction to the region’s opal history.
  • Uluru or Alice SpringsUluru is a separate detour from the highway, not a roadside stop in Alice Springs. If it is on your list, include the extra driving and nights in your itinerary.
  • North through the CentreAlice Springs can be a base for nearby ranges before the long run towards Tennant Creek. Choose fuel and overnight stops in advance.
  • Katherine to DarwinAllow time for the Top End rather than treating Katherine as only a fuel stop. Park access and activities can depend on weather and road conditions.

Plan for the gaps

Remote driving is different from a city-to-city highway trip. Start each leg knowing where you intend to refuel and sleep, carry drinking water, and allow a reserve for delays. Opening hours and services can change, so check them before relying on a particular stop.

Download maps before leaving coverage, share your intended route with someone, and avoid driving tired or at dawn and dusk when wildlife can be harder to see. Check the Northern Territory road report and local warnings before travel.

Season and vehicle choice

Conditions change across a journey that spans the Centre and tropical north. Heat, rain and flooding can alter access, especially on side roads. The main highway is sealed, but a detour may have a different surface or restrictions; verify the exact roads and the hire agreement.

Choose a vehicle with enough room for passengers and luggage, and check its practical fuel range. If you begin in the Red Centre, compare Wicked Campers’ campervan hire in Alice Springs and confirm permitted roads and one-way conditions.

Questions before you go

Is Uluru on the Stuart Highway?

No. Visiting Uluru requires leaving the highway and adding a separate return or onward route. Plan extra driving and accommodation.

Do I need a 4WD for the highway?

The principal highway is sealed; whether a 4WD is needed depends on your chosen side roads and conditions. Confirm restrictions with the operator.

How many days should I allow?

There is no single answer: the number depends on your daily driving limit, overnight stops and detours. Add spare time rather than scheduling only moving hours.
